Curaçao Fire Department Distributes Over 600 Smoke Detectors During Fire Prevention Week

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Fire Department distributed more than 600 smoke detectors to residents as part of Fire Prevention Week 2025, an island-wide awareness campaign focused on improving home fire safety.

The smoke detectors were handed out during a series of educational events, including community meetings in Barber and Brievengat, as well as the large prevention fair “E Mihó Opshon” in Punda.

At each location, officers from the Fire Prevention Division provided hands-on demonstrations on how to properly install and maintain smoke detectors. They also shared practical tips to help households prevent fires and respond safely in emergency situations.

According to Dikmar Oleana, Head of the Fire Prevention Division, smoke detectors are among the most effective tools for saving lives during fires.

“Every home in Curaçao should have a smoke detector,” Oleana said. “It’s a small, inexpensive device, but it can make the difference between life and death in the event of a fire.”

During the final event on Thursday, the fire department also distributed informational materials and interactive activities for children, including a chance for visitors to extinguish a live fire under supervision. Attendees received small gifts and educational brochures promoting fire awareness.

All three events drew large, enthusiastic crowds, highlighting the community’s growing interest in fire safety education and prevention measures across the island.
