Curaçao ID Cards to Include Gender-Neutral Option ‘X’

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao identity card, known as the sédula, can now include the gender designation “X.” Minister of Governance, Planning and Public Service, Kimberley Lew-Jen-Tai, confirmed the change following an update to the official model of the ID card.

The option applies exclusively to individuals for whom a court has determined that they cannot be registered as male or female.

Until now, the sédula only recognized the categories “M” (male), “V” (female), and “O” (unknown). With the introduction of “X,” Curaçao joins an international movement toward more inclusive, gender-neutral registration.

Minister Lew-Jen-Tai also clarified that while registered partnerships are not formally recognized as a legal civil status under Curaçaoan law, they may, upon request, be noted in travel documents, including the sédula.
