WILLEMSTAD – According to data from the Curaçao Ports Authority (CPA), the island is well on its way to reaching a milestone: attracting one million cruise passengers by the end of 2025. Between January and June, 474,572 passengers arrived aboard 185 cruise ships, signaling strong momentum in the island’s cruise tourism sector.
Historic Growth in Cruise Tourism
The tourism surge builds on an impressive 2024 performance, when Curaçao welcomed 834,890 cruise visitors—a 17.5% increase from 2023—across 328 ship calls. In total, the island received 1,570,670 visitors in 2024, up 20% from the previous year, combining stayover travelers, day-trippers, and cruise passengers.
Destination of the Year
Curaçao’s infrastructure and hospitality were recognized nationally as the island earned the title of "Cruise Port of the Year" in the Caribbean by the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA). This acclaim reflects both improved port facilities and enhanced passenger experience.
Infrastructure Investment Pays Off
Key to this success has been the expansion of cruise facilities. A second mega pier, completed in 2017 at a cost of USD 40 million, increased capacity to accommodate more and larger vessels. Plans are also underway for phase two of the Rif Seaport development—a new cruise terminal to support continued growth toward the one-million-passenger goal.
Regional Context & Future Outlook
The global cruise industry remains resilient, with as many as 37.7 million cruise passengers projected for 2025, and the Caribbean continues to be its most popular destination—representing over 40% of all itineraries. Within the Southern Caribbean, Curaçao stands out as one of the fastest growing ports, seeing nearly 600,000 annual cruise tourist arrivals—a sharp increase from fewer than 300,000 in 2001.
Looking Ahead
With 474,572 visitors already recorded in just six months, the island needs roughly 525,000 additional cruise arrivals to hit the one-million mark. If current trends continue, that target appears well within reach—a remarkable economic boost that will enrich local businesses, tourism services, and community vibrancy.
