Digital innovation and renewed approach improve carnival

WILLEMSTAD - The celebration of Carnival 2024 in Curaçao has reached a milestone with the introduction of a fully digital registration and a renewed approach for the allocation of plots along the route. This year marks a historic moment for this cultural event, thanks to the efforts of the Prekario Team, as reported by the Ministry of Traffic and Transport.

The registration period for existing and new customers interested in a plot began on November 20 and originally closed on December 15. Due to customer feedback, this period was extended by two weeks until December 29. This year, the Prekario Team managed nearly 1,400 plots, of which more than ninety were specifically designated for food and beverage sales.

The new measurement of plots resulted in the release of 82 plots through precise measurements, identification of 78 plots that were not available for Carnival 2024, and the registration of eleven exceptions. A total of 464 applications were received, with nine on the waiting list granted a permit.

The digital process has led to more efficient management and the ability to measure each plot accurately. While the team encountered challenges, these were resolved with the assigned experts. This has led to corrections for the next Carnival period, especially in cases where plots were unintentionally placed near lampposts, signs, or bus stops.

In total, five permits were revoked because the respective plots were not cleaned on time, and three investigations are ongoing for abandoned waste. Additionally, cleaning the Carnival route this year required two days instead of one, mainly due to the amount of abandoned pallets.
