WILLEMSTAD – The newly renovated Tax Office on Regentesselaan now meets nearly all fire safety requirements, according to the Ministry of Finance. The statement follows recent criticism in the media and Parliament over alleged safety concerns at the building.
Almost 2.8 million guilders have been invested in large-scale improvements to bring the facility up to standard.
From Criticism to Action
Concerns over safety were raised earlier this year after an initial inspection by the Fire Department. Based on its recommendations, immediate measures were taken. Nearly all of those recommendations have now been implemented in consultation with the Fire Department, using only certified local companies.
A second inspection took place last Friday to review progress. A new interim report is expected within a week and will be made public, Finance Minister Javier Silvania confirmed, promising full transparency on the building’s current condition.
Major Safety Enhancements
The upgrades include the installation of four fire escapes, an increase in emergency exits from five to nine, and the addition of sufficient fire extinguishers and hose reels. The grounds are now fully fenced, and a 24-hour security lodge has been established.
On September 17, a fully certified fire alarm system was activated. Work is ongoing to bring a sprinkler system with water tank online, finalize an evacuation plan, and certify in-house emergency response staff.
The Ministry emphasized that the building is now almost fully compliant with fire safety standards, calling the changes a dramatic improvement compared to previous office locations.
Contrast With Old Facilities
The old Regentesselaan building had only two emergency exits and an outdated alarm system, while the temporary office at the World Trade Center had just one emergency exit and no certified fire protection. Both sites also suffered from poor air quality and inadequate air conditioning.
By contrast, the current office now provides employees and visitors with a safe, modern, and healthy workplace that not only meets today’s technical requirements but also improves comfort and customer service.
