First Concrete Poured for Totolika’s New Residential Care Facility in Noord-Zapateer

WILLEMSTAD – Construction officially began this morning on Kas Amerigo Thodé, the new residential care facility of Totolika in Noord-Zapateer. The project will provide 40 units where people with intellectual disabilities can live as independently as possible under professional guidance.

Health Minister Javier Silvania gave the symbolic start to the project by operating the concrete pump himself. The construction is being carried out by Betonbouw N.V. together with technical installation company GEWI, while architectural consultancy Babranis is overseeing project management and supervision. Completion is scheduled for May next year.

The new facility marks a major step forward in offering modern, supportive housing for Totolika residents, many of whom currently live in outdated accommodations. The initiative is designed to promote independence while ensuring safety and access to care.

However, the project has also sparked debate over its name. While it is currently called Kas Amerigo Thodé, a group is advocating for it to be renamed Kas Aminta Sprockel, in honor of the founder of the Totolika parents’ association.

The final decision on the name has not yet been made, but for the families and residents of Totolika, the focus remains on the timely completion of a facility that promises to improve quality of life and provide dignified housing for some of Curaçao’s most vulnerable citizens.
