Fleur de Marie Struggling With Surge in Illegal Brothels and Social Problems

WILLEMSTAD – The neighborhood of Fleur de Marie is facing a sharp increase in illegal brothels, prostitution, and related social issues, according to Maghalie van der Bunt-George, representative of the public corporation Samenwerkingsverband Ontwikkeling Fleur de Marie.

Van der Bunt-George says the situation has deteriorated significantly since the closure of Campo Alegre in 2020. Many of the women involved are reportedly foreign nationals who may be residing on the island illegally.

She warns that these women are often living and working in degrading conditions and may be victims of exploitation or human trafficking.

Fleur de Marie is considered a socially vulnerable neighborhood, and residents have increasingly complained about the nuisance caused by prostitution activities in the area.

Van der Bunt-George is urging authorities to address the problem, citing both public safety concerns and the urgent need to protect potential victims of exploitation.
