WILLEMSTAD - The Losing Zayn Gaining an Angel Foundation has called on the Parliament of Curaçao to share a public message of support on its official Facebook page in recognition of International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, observed worldwide in October.
In a letter addressed to Parliament, the foundation wrote that “the loss of a baby or pregnancy is one of the deepest pains a parent can experience.” The organization, active since 2017, aims to ensure that Curaçaoan families who experience such loss know they are not alone and that local support and resources are available to help them through their grief.
According to recent data from the Curaçao Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), the island records just over 1,100 births per year, with an average of 13 to 15 infant deaths within the first year of life. This corresponds to an infant mortality rate of over 11 per 1,000 live births, a figure notably higher than in the Netherlands.
The foundation urged Parliament to help amplify its awareness message, so that more parents can access support networks, counseling, and information. By breaking the taboo surrounding pregnancy and infant loss, the organization hopes to foster greater openness and compassion within Curaçaoan society.
“By sharing a message of support together, we show grieving parents that they are not alone,” the foundation wrote in its letter.
The Losing Zayn Gaining an Angel Foundation continues to advocate for awareness, remembrance, and emotional healing, emphasizing that acknowledgment and community support are vital steps toward helping families cope with loss.
