WILLEMSTAD - The government’s Multidisciplinary Control Team carried out an inspection yesterday that led to the arrest of several undocumented workers at a construction site on Seru Loraweg.
The task force — which includes officials from the Tax Inspectorate (BAB), the Ministry of Traffic, Transportation and Spatial Planning (VVRP), the Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW), and the police — visited the site where a contractor was conducting asphalting work.
When the workers noticed the authorities, two of them fled the scene and drove off in a car. Upon inspection, it was determined that none of the laborers present held valid documents permitting them to reside or work on the island.
In total, six men and one minor were arrested. Authorities have not yet released details about the contractor responsible for the project or whether further legal action will be taken against the employer.
The arrests highlight ongoing concerns about the use of undocumented labor in Curaçao’s construction sector and the government’s stepped-up enforcement efforts.
