Historic Document Donated During Dia di Lucha pa Libertat Commemoration

WILLEMSTAD – During the commemoration of Dia di Lucha pa Libertat on August 17, 2025, organized by the Asosiashon Promoshon Konsenshi Istóriko (APKI), the Stichting Standbeeld mr. dr. Moises Frumencio Da Costa Gomez donated an important historical document: the Bestuurscollege decision of June 28, 1963.

The decision was initiated by mr. dr. Moises Frumencio Da Costa Gomez himself, who advocated for the creation of a monument to mark the centennial commemoration of the abolition of slavery. The document reflects the original intention to establish a monument symbolizing the renewed strength and spirit of the people. Although the plan was never fully realized due to political developments, it remains a powerful symbol of Da Costa Gomez’s vision and determination.

Following a speech by Dr. Maria Liberia-Peters, chair of the foundation, the document was presented as a gesture of appreciation to:

The Government of Curaçao: Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, Mr. Sithree van Heydoorn

Four organizations and institutions dedicated to education, culture, history, and community development:

Asosiashon Promoshon Konsenshi Istóriko (APKI) – Mr. Ostrid Servinus and Ms. Rayzhana Martha

University of Curaçao Dr. Moises Da Costa Gomez (UoC) – Ms. Stella van Rijn

Partido Nashonal di Pueblo (PNP) – Mr. Dudley Lucia

Fundashon Museo Tula – Mr. Elfried Koots and Ms. Jeanne Henriquez

“With this donation, we not only honor the vision of mr. dr. Da Costa Gomez, but also the perseverance of our people,” said Dr. Maria Liberia-Peters. “The 1963 decision reminds us that freedom and equality must be defended and safeguarded again and again.”

The Stichting Standbeeld mr. dr. Moises Frumencio Da Costa Gomez is dedicated to preserving the legacy and ideals of Da Costa Gomez for future generations. Through education and inspiration, the foundation highlights his invaluable contribution to Curaçao’s development, with special attention to his lifelong fight for rights, equality, and the protection of the less privileged in society.

By donating this historic decision, the foundation aims to strengthen awareness of Da Costa Gomez’s legacy and the enduring significance of slavery’s history in the making of Curaçao.
