Info evening on sustainable fishing and new market opportunities by FKUP

WILLEMSTAD - On the initiative of Lutson Lucas from the Federashon Kooperativanan Uní di Produkshon (FKUP), an inspiring information evening was held for fishermen and other interested attendees. The event was organized in collaboration with Lionfish Caribbean, the Curaçao-based company dedicated to controlling the population of the invasive lionfish and promoting greater awareness and consumption of invasive species.

During the evening, Lisette Keus, founder of Lionfish Caribbean, gave a presentation about the lionfish (Pterois volitans).. She explained how fishermen can help protect native fish species by catching lionfish and how this fish represents not only an ecological problem but also an economic opportunity.

Through a fish-cleaning demonstration, Keus showed how fishermen can better utilize and add value to their catch. Participants also learned how to handle a lionfish sting and how to work safely with the species. The presentation further highlighted the importance of sustainable fishing practices on Curaçao and throughout the region.

The goal of FKUP and Lionfish Caribbean is to work together with local fishermen to create a sustainable, local, and future-oriented market, with respect for community, nature, and economy. Both FKUP and Lionfish Caribbean emphasized that such gatherings are essential to make the fishing sector more resilient and to inspire younger fishermen to work in a sustainable way.

The evening ended with of course freshly prepared lionfish tacos.
