WILLEMSTAD – More than one hundred children received free haircuts from inmates at the SDKK prison as part of the initiative “Back to School – SDKK Barbershop.” The four-day project was organized to support children as they prepare for the new academic year.
The initiative was initially designed for children of inmates, as well as young people from the JJIC youth facility, boarding schools, and schools in the Koralspecht neighborhood. However, due to overwhelmingly positive feedback, the prison decided to extend the program to all children on Curaçao.
Resocialization Effort
The haircut project is part of the prison’s broader resocialization program. According to the prison management, the aim was to allow inmates to contribute meaningfully to society.
“The goal of this project was to give back to the community,” the prison stated.
The event not only provided practical help to families ahead of the school year but also offered inmates a chance to develop skills and strengthen their sense of responsibility toward the community.
