Justice Minister Hato: Tackling Illegal Dumping Requires Joint Action with GMN

WILLEMSTAD – Minister of Justice Shalten Hato has stated that illegal waste dumping and open-air burning can only be effectively addressed through joint efforts with the Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN). His comments came in response to questions from former Member of Parliament Annemaria Pauletta, which took nine months to be formally answered.

Hato stressed that every citizen is obliged to comply with the law. He explained that his ministry is working with GMN to create a coordinated structure to combat illegal dumping and waste burning. While GMN is responsible for public awareness campaigns, the Justice Ministry has already taken steps to strengthen prevention and community outreach in neighborhoods.

Pauletta had also urged Hato to take a firm public stance against disorderly behavior and to clearly label it as unacceptable. In his reply, the minister pointed to his earlier explanations about GMN’s role and the joint responsibilities of government agencies.

Persistent challenge

Illegal dumping and waste burning remain a long-standing challenge on Curaçao. Despite past awareness campaigns and legislation, enforcement has proven both complex and costly. Meanwhile, residents and environmental groups continue to raise concerns about the harmful impact on public health and the environment.
