Justice Ministry Launches Specialized Police Team to Combat Domestic and Relationship Violence

WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Justice has announced the creation of a new specialized police unit dedicated to tackling domestic and relationship violence. The team, temporarily named Tim Rèspèt i Protekshon (TRP) — meaning Respect and Protection Team — will focus on responding faster and with greater empathy to reports of abuse, while offering stronger protection and support for victims.

Justice Minister Shalten Hato introduced the measure following last weekend’s tragic case of femicide, which has reignited public concern about violence against women on the island.

The new TRP unit will operate under the Curaçao Police Force (KPC) and will function according to the principle of “protecting before it’s too late.” The team will work closely with social service organizations, employ modern data and registration systems, and ensure continuous victim support from the moment a report is filed.

In addition to forming the TRP team, the Ministry is investing in specialized training for police officers to improve gender sensitivity and victim-centered approaches. Authorities are also enhancing data collection and analysis on cases of domestic and gender-based violence to better identify patterns and prevent future incidents.

Minister Hato emphasized that these measures mark a proactive shift in Curaçao’s justice approach, ensuring that victims are heard, protected, and supported before violence escalates.
