WILLEMSTAD - A 33-year-old man has been convicted for the assault of a Dutch intern following a boat party at Fuik Bay.
The court sentenced the man to 200 hours of community service and ordered him to pay 4,000 guilders in compensation to the victim. He also received a 180-day prison sentence, of which 168 days are suspended with a three-year probation period. The 12 days he spent in pre-trial detention will count as time served.
According to the court, the man — who was working as an MC during the event — inappropriately touched the woman. When she confronted him about his behavior, he punched her in the face, causing serious injuries, including fractures to her eye socket and cheekbone.
The judge rejected the defendant’s claim of self-defense, stating that he had failed to take responsibility for his actions.
The case has drawn attention on social media, highlighting growing concerns about violence against women and misconduct during large social events on the island.
