Maritime Survey for New CELIA Undersea Data Cable to Begin Off Bonaire

KRALENDIJK – The maritime survey for the new CELIA undersea data cable will begin at the end of August off the coast of Bonaire, the Rijksdienst Caribisch Nederland has announced.

A specialized survey vessel will operate between Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire, mapping the seabed with advanced sonar equipment. The study will examine depth, topography, coral reefs, shipwrecks, and other materials to determine the safest and most suitable route for the cable.

Organizations including STINAPA Bonaire, the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, and Rijkswaterstaat are acting as advisers during the project.

The CELIA cable is scheduled for completion in 2027 and will connect Bonaire and Curaçao to a wider Caribbean network linking Aruba, Martinique, and Florida. According to the Dutch government, the project represents a major step toward faster, more stable, and more reliable internet service for residents and businesses.
