Monuments Council Urges Protection of Historic Ser’i Neger/Ser’i Kloof Site

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Monuments Council has renewed its call to Minister of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning Charles Cooper to formally designate the historic area of Ser’i Neger/Ser’i Kloof as protected heritage. The council wants the site to be officially recognized as a Place of Memory.

Exactly 230 years ago, this location in Banda’bou was the scene of a slave uprising that ended in a bloody battle, claiming the lives of more than one hundred enslaved people.

A previous request to the government had already urged formal protection for the site, which would include a ban on new construction in the area. The council emphasizes that Curaçao’s history of slavery should be given a visible and respectful place in the island’s landscape.
