MP Ishahier Monte Calls for Legalization Program for Undocumented Migrants in Curaçao

WILLEMSTADMember of Parliament Ishahier Monte of the MFK party is urging the government to establish a structural program to grant legal status to undocumented migrants living in Curaçao. In written questions to Minister of Justice Shalten Hato, Monte stressed that such a measure is vital for stability on the island.

According to Monte, many foreigners arrive in Curaçao legally as tourists but fail to return to their home countries, creating a growing group of people living without valid documentation. He warns that this situation contributes to social challenges such as poverty, inequality, and insecurity.

Regularization to support the labor market

Monte argues that a new policy allowing undocumented migrants to regularize their status would give them the chance to live “a dignified life without fear.” At the same time, he notes that such a program could strengthen the labor market. Many local companies are struggling with staff shortages, and cooperation with the Ministry of Social Development, Labor, and Welfare could open up opportunities for both Curaçaoans and foreign workers.

He also pushed back against the perception that foreigners are taking jobs away from locals. “There is work enough for everyone,” Monte stated. He called for a transparent and fair process that provides stability for undocumented migrants while ensuring job security for Curaçaoans.
