MP Nita Praises Aqualectra’s Efforts but Calls for Structural Support for Low-Income Households

WILLEMSTAD - Member of Parliament Nita has commended the recent initiatives of Curaçao’s electricity and water company, Aqualectra, while at the same time urging for structural solutions to assist citizens with limited financial means.

In a recent parliamentary session, MP Nita raised a series of questions concerning the island’s electricity supply challenges and the recent power outage, emphasizing the importance of ensuring affordable and realistic payment options for those most in need. She also suggested the government explore the creation of a debt-relief mechanism to help low-income families struggling with unmanageable utility debts.

According to Nita, effective communication with the public is vital during periods of service interruption, particularly during widespread blackouts. A well-coordinated strategic communication plan, she said, can reduce public tension and maintain trust by keeping citizens informed about the causes and duration of power disruptions.

MP Nita submitted several technical and policy-related questions to the government and Aqualectra, seeking greater transparency and accountability in the company’s operations. Her inquiries included:

Whether a grid stability study has been conducted to assess potential issues with frequency, voltage, or plant synchronization;

The current percentage of technical losses in the power grid;

The average restoration time for different types of outages (transmission, distribution, generation), particularly since the introduction of battery systems;

Aqualectra’s strategic plan to ensure energy supply security over the next five to ten years;

How the company is accounting for the impact of climate change on power generation, such as rising temperatures and sea levels;

The role of the government in supervising and managing investments for grid modernization;

Measures Aqualectra is taking to improve public communication during outages, given that past efforts have been insufficient;

Whether the company provides training programs for technicians to ensure their skills remain up to date with new technologies; and

Whether Aqualectra is collaborating with local universities or international experts to explore innovative energy solutions beyond the current battery projects.

Nita reiterated that Aqualectra’s modernization efforts are a positive step forward, particularly the integration of battery systems that enhance grid stability. However, she stressed that social equity must remain central to the island’s energy policy.

“Energy security must go hand in hand with social responsibility,” she stated. “Our people deserve not only a reliable supply but also one they can afford.”

The MP concluded by urging the government and Aqualectra to maintain open communication with the public and to develop long-term strategies that balance technological advancement, environmental sustainability, and social protection.
