Initiative honors Curaçaoan film pioneer and boosts early-stage film development across the region
WILLEMSTAD - A new initiative called the Alex Alberto Film Fund has been launched to support filmmakers in Curaçao and the wider Caribbean region. The fund specifically targets the film sector, helping creators in the early stages of production, such as developing ideas, treatments, and scripts for documentaries and feature films.
According to the organizers, these early development phases are crucial for creativity yet often struggle to secure financing. By offering dedicated support at this stage, the fund aims to strengthen the professional growth of film projects and increase the visibility of Caribbean stories in the global film industry.
Honoring a Curaçaoan Film Pioneer
The fund is named after Alex Alberto, a renowned Curaçaoan cameraman and one of the pioneers in capturing the island’s audiovisual heritage. Alberto’s work played a vital role in documenting Curaçao’s cultural identity through film and television.
By bearing his name, the fund pays tribute to his legacy while fostering a new generation of storytellers committed to authentic, local narratives.
A Pillar for Regional Cultural Development
The Cultural Fund (Cultuurfonds), which oversees the initiative, describes such “Funds in Name” as essential pillars for the development of culture and nature across the Dutch Caribbean islands. These funds provide structural support for projects that might otherwise struggle to obtain financing — especially those rooted in local communities, promoting young talent, or preserving cultural heritage.
Individuals, families, and companies can contribute to these funds either during their lifetime or through their wills, ensuring a lasting impact on cultural and social growth.
The Alex Alberto Film Fund is expected to become a cornerstone for Caribbean film development, offering creators the tools and resources to transform their ideas into impactful stories that reflect the richness and diversity of the region’s cultural landscape.
