Parliament Speaker Rejects Urgent Question Hour on Regional Tensions

WILLEMSTAD Parliament Speaker Fergino Brownbill (MFK) has rejected requests from the PAR and PNP factions to hold an urgent Question Hour in Parliament regarding escalating tensions in the Caribbean region.

The concerns focus on the growing strain between Venezuela and the United States, following Washington’s announcement that it will deploy military units to the Caribbean Sea. While the U.S. maintains the operation is aimed at combating drug trafficking and narco-terrorism, opposition factions in Curaçao fear the move could have serious consequences for the island’s security.

Brownbill argued that a separate Question Hour is unnecessary, as the matter has already been raised through parliamentary questions, particularly by the MAN-PIN faction. Those earlier questions asked the government to clarify potential repercussions for Curaçao and to keep both Parliament and the public informed.

PAR parliamentarian Quincy Girigorie and PNP faction leader Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia had also pressed for the session, insisting the government explain how it intends to safeguard Curaçao’s security and sovereignty, and what precautionary measures are being taken.

“For now, the matter remains limited to the previously submitted questions, which are still awaiting the government’s response,” Brownbill stated.
