Parliamentary Year 2025–2026 Officially Opened with Address by the President of Parliament

WILLEMSTAD – The parliamentary year 2025–2026 was officially opened in Curaçao with a solemn speech by the President of Parliament, delivered in the presence of Governor Lucille George-Wout, Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas, members of the Pisas III cabinet, visiting dignitaries, and the people of Curaçao.

In his address, the President highlighted the symbolic and practical importance of the annual opening of Parliament, calling it both a representation of democracy and of Curaçao’s identity as a people.

“Today we are not here only to hear the direction that government will propose,” he said, “but also to reaffirm that Parliament is the backbone of our system, where the voice of the people is heard and valued. This is a solemn moment, a moment of direction, and a moment to show clearly that Parliament guides Curaçao with integrity, courage, and vision for the future.”

The President took the opportunity to thank Governor George-Wout for her twelve years of service, describing her leadership as a source of strength for institutions and inspiration for a generation of public servants.

Looking ahead, the President emphasized the role of Parliament as the representative body of the people and the place where debates, consensus, and decisions in the public interest must take place. He acknowledged the serious challenges the country faces—social, economic, environmental, financial, and public health—but framed them as opportunities for leadership, unity, and political maturity.

New Initiatives for Integrity and Recognition

During the speech, the President announced two new initiatives. The first is the introduction of Parliamentary Awards to honor citizens or organizations that have made exceptional contributions to the community. These awards, he said, will recognize individuals and groups who inspire others, serve with love, and elevate the nation.

The second initiative is the creation of a Code of Conduct for Parliament, to be overseen by a supervisory body. “Integrity in politics is not a luxury, it is an obligation,” he stated. “Without integrity, there is no trust; and without trust, there is no democracy.”

A Call to the People

Reiterating his leadership principles of “Reconnect, Rebuild, and Represent,” the President pledged to continue working with transparency, integrity, and accessibility in the new legislative year. He also called on the people of Curaçao to remain engaged in the democratic process.

“Our democracy is a fragile treasure that must be protected,” he said. “A Parliament without the people is not a Parliament.”

Concluding his speech, the President declared the 2025–2026 parliamentary year officially open, offering gratitude, faith, and love for the country.

“God bless Parliament, God bless the people of Curaçao, and God bless Curaçao.”
