Prime Minister Pisas Attends Memorial Ceremony for the 1967 Queen Juliana Bridge Collapse

WILLEMSTAD - On November 6, 2025, Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas attended the memorial ceremony commemorating the collapse of the Queen Juliana Bridge in 1967, a tragedy that remains deeply etched in Curaçao’s history.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Pisas reflected on the loss of 15 Curaçaoan workers who died in the disaster. He emphasized that every development project must be carried out with strict safety measures, stressing that “progress should never come at the cost of a human life.”

The ceremony brought together families of the victims, union representatives, government officials, and construction safety experts. After laying a wreath at the monument, Prime Minister Pisas delivered his address, followed by speeches from various union leaders.

One of the most moving moments came when the niece of one of the victims shared her family’s story — a heartfelt testimony that deeply touched those in attendance.

“The bridge we see today stands as a symbol of unity and progress,” Pisas said. “It reminds us not only of the great loss our people endured but also of the resilience we continue to show in difficult times.”

The Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening workplace safety standards and ensuring that all workers in the construction sector are protected from preventable risks.

The Queen Juliana Bridge, completed after the tragedy, remains one of Curaçao’s most iconic landmarks — a lasting testament to the nation’s perseverance and determination to rise after loss.
