WILLEMSTAD - On Sunday evening, dozens of people gathered at Brionplein in Otrobanda to join the protest organized by Curaçao for Palestine, a local action group calling for an end to the ongoing violence in Palestine and for global solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The demonstration, held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., was marked by chants, banners, and the rhythmic sound of pots and pans, as participants dressed in red — the color of resistance — made their voices heard under the slogan “Make noise against injustice.”
Linking Local and Global Struggles
According to the organizers, the protest went beyond the Middle East conflict, touching on broader issues of colonialism, imperialism, and racism.
“What is happening in Palestine also concerns us,” said a spokesperson for Curaçao for Palestine. “The history of Curaçao is rooted in oppression and inequality. It is our responsibility to actively distance ourselves from that legacy.”
The protest featured slogans such as “Never again is now,” “Silence is violence,” and “Nobody is free until everybody is free,” echoing messages seen at solidarity demonstrations around the world this weekend.
Peaceful Demonstration and Open Invitation
Organizers emphasized that the event was entirely peaceful and open to everyone, regardless of background or belief. “Every voice matters in drawing the red line,” they wrote in their public invitation.
Sunday’s gathering at Brionplein placed Curaçao among dozens of cities worldwide where people took to the streets this weekend to call for peace, justice, and an end to the suffering of civilians in Palestine.
