Public Schools Service Opens New Academic Year with Annual Start Conference

WILLEMSTAD – The Public Schools Service (Dienst Openbare Scholen, DOS) will officially open the new school year on Tuesday, August 19, with its annual start conference. This year’s theme, “DOS den Balansa: e hende i e kontenido (“DOS in Balance: the Person and the Content”), highlights the importance of balance between the education professional and the content of the curriculum.

Hundreds of teachers and school staff will take part in more than thirty workshops and lectures spread across twenty locations in Skalo. Key topics include multilingual education, socio-emotional development, leadership, wellbeing, and classroom innovation. Participants can choose sessions ranging from conflict resolution and creative writing to the impact of technology in education and personal growth.

International and Local Expertise

The keynote speakers are Nancy Rodrigues Pereira, who will address the importance of happiness and wellbeing in educational organizations, and Prof. Joana Duarte of the University of Groningen. Duarte, who leads the DOS initiative for inclusive language education, will emphasize how multilingualism and diversity can be turned into opportunities for Curaçaoan students. In addition, education innovator Steven de Lira will highlight socio-emotional development as the foundation of effective teaching.

More Than a Study Day

According to DOS Director Nihayra Leona, the gathering is intended as more than a mandatory professional training. “Only when we are in balance as individuals can we build an education system that truly makes a difference,” she said. DOS describes the conference as a moment of connection, recognition, and renewed energy, rather than just a training day.

Official Start of the School Year

The Start Conference traditionally marks the official kickoff of the school year. For 2025–2026, DOS is placing a strong focus on renewal and inclusivity. The event begins with a plenary session at Oranjestraat and concludes with a joint gathering in the DOS garden.
