WILLEMSTAD - The long-awaited restoration of the historic City Hall building in downtown Willemstad has officially begun. After five years of delay, the project finally received its monument permit, allowing renovation work to commence.
Although the demolition and construction permit for the rear section of the building is still under review, restoration of the front façade and main structure is now moving forward.
The first phase focuses on restoring the interior to its original state, removing later modifications that altered the building’s historic character. In subsequent stages, the team will begin redecorating and restoring the exterior façade, preserving the architectural heritage that makes the building one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
Workers will start by removing lowered ceilings, electrical wiring, and outdated air-conditioning systems. This initial “stripping phase” is expected to take four to five months.
According to project planners, the entire renovation process will take about one year to complete. Once finished, the restored City Hall will once again serve as a symbol of Willemstad’s rich history and cultural pride.
