WILLEMSTAD – Residents of Santo Domingoweg and the surrounding area say they have been without garbage collection from Selikor for more than four weeks, leaving trash piling up on the streets and creating severe health and hygiene concerns.
Locals describe worsening conditions caused by foul odors, cockroaches, rats, and mosquitoes breeding in the uncollected waste. “We don’t know what else to do. We’ve tried calling, emailing, and even visiting Selikor in person, but no one listens,” residents told the press.
A problem going back two years
According to residents, this is not the first time they have been neglected. Over the past two years, there have been repeated periods when garbage collection stopped for weeks at a time. In the past, Selikor would usually respond within a couple of days after complaints, but this time the situation is different.
“Now it feels like our neighborhood has been completely removed from the collection route. We’ve never experienced anything this bad,” one frustrated resident explained.
No accountability
Residents also complain that no one is taking responsibility for the issue. “Whenever we call or go in person, nobody wants to talk about it or do anything to solve it,” they said.
With garbage bins overflowing, people have started dumping trash on the streets, further worsening the situation. “We’re completely fed up,” residents said, calling on authorities and Selikor to address the crisis immediately.
