WILLEMSTAD – Residents of Curaçao are being reminded that they can still donate their old Netherlands Antillean guilder (Naf) coins and banknotes to local charities through the Cash for Care project. The island’s Rotary Clubs are encouraging people to empty drawers and jars of the obsolete currency and drop them off at designated donation stations.
Since the introduction of the Caribbean guilder (Cg), the old Naf currency is no longer legal tender. To give the leftover money a meaningful purpose, the Rotary Clubs launched the Cash for Care initiative in June, placing specially designed donation stations across the island.
Ten Donation Stations Across Curaçao
While the project has already seen strong participation, organizers believe even more can be collected. Donation stations — creatively made from repurposed gas cylinders — are located at:
Home Plus Sta. Maria
Van der Tweel Zeelandia
Vreugdenhil Supermarket
Sambil Carrefour
Zuikertuin Mall
VidaNova Bank
Centrum Mahaai
Centrum Piscadera
Kooyman Zeelandia
Kooyman Noorduynweg
Proceeds to Local Charities
Rotary members collect the donated currency weekly and exchange it at the Central Bank. Later this year, the total proceeds will be distributed to local charities working in education, poverty reduction, animal welfare, sports, health, and environmental conservation.
The Rotary Clubs hope the community will continue to contribute, turning unused coins and bills into tangible support for those in need across the island.
