WILLEMSTAD - Finance Minister Javier Silvania (MFK) and the head of the Tax Receiver’s Office, Alfonso Trona, have become embroiled in a bitter dispute, with both men hurling accusations during what appears to have been an official meeting on September 26. A recording of the altercation has leaked and is now circulating widely on WhatsApp, Facebook, and even as a viral reel.
In the audio, confirmed authentic by multiple sources familiar with the voices, Silvania is heard calling Trona corrupt. Trona fires back, claiming he has documents in his drawer that prove who the “real” corrupt official is. The exchange quickly devolves into insults and profanity, with a female voice attempting to mediate. Some initially believed it was SOAW Minister Charetti America-Francisca, but she has firmly denied being present.
The confrontation reportedly took place in front of civil servants and other government officials, making the episode even more explosive.
A long-running feud
Tensions between Silvania and Trona are not new. The two have clashed repeatedly over tax enforcement, reporting requirements, and the discretionary powers of the Receiver. Silvania has accused Trona of obstruction, while Trona has countered that the minister is overstepping his authority.
The leaked audio has escalated the feud to an unprecedented level. For the first time, allegations of corruption between the two men are not just whispered behind closed doors but are publicly documented and heard by the wider community.
Calls for investigation
The public release has triggered demands for action. Commentators in the media argue that the Public Prosecutor’s Office (OM) must now investigate the claims, given that the allegations are no longer private but available in a public recording.
So far, neither Silvania nor Trona has offered a substantive response. Trona indicated to the media: “Sorry, I have no comment.” Prime Minister and MFK leader Gilmar Pisas has also remained silent on the matter.
The incident has sparked widespread debate over governance, integrity, and accountability within Curaçao’s financial administration, leaving many to wonder what political and legal fallout will follow.
