WILLEMSTAD - The talent-development program Zjeitu is entering its final phase with a new, free photography workshop for young people from the island’s Páriba region. The first class will be held on Friday, October 3, at the Montaña Community Center.
The sessions are led by Giscard Lemarque Johannes of Moon 25 Pictures, who offered a preview during the Wintertuin Curaçao Festival: participants will learn to take striking photos with their own mobile phones—any brand or model. The emphasis is not on the camera, but on the story each image tells.
Students will practice composing two separate photos that feature different subjects yet fit together within a single visual space, focusing on shooting angles and color use. The course also includes a live photoshoot with a model and backdrop. Beyond technical tips, the workshop prioritizes composition and how to portray people beautifully.
“I want to teach them as much as possible at different levels so they start seeing photography as a serious hobby—or even a side job,” said instructor Giscard. “Photography is becoming more popular. With this workshop I want to broaden their understanding of the medium.”
Earlier Zjeitu workshops in poetry and painting were led by spoken-word artist Calviany Eleonora and visual artist Janice Jansen. Like them, Giscard invites participants into a world where experimentation, joy, and self-expression come first.
Organizers say participants from previous sessions were enthusiastic to see free courses return to their community center. Through Zjeitu, Wintertuin Curaçao aims to support youth creativity while strengthening self-image and self-worth, and building social cohesion and expressive skills in the community.
The series will conclude with an exhibition of the best works. Participants will learn how to select images for display and receive guidance on pricing and marketing. A festive opening in December—with snacks, drinks, poetry performances, and live music—will be announced later.
Youth living in Montaña, Rooi Santu, Sabana Baka, and Fuik are warmly invited to join. Classes take place at the Montaña Community Center and are free of charge. Wintertuin Curaçao will provide snacks and drinks. To register, contact +599 95115624 via WhatsApp or phone.
