Aqualectra Begins Power Restoration, But Warns Situation Remains Fragile

WILLEMSTAD  Utility company Aqualectra has begun restoring electricity in parts of Curaçao following Wednesday’s island-wide blackout, but cautions that the situation remains fragile and outages may continue. Some neighborhoods have already regained power, though full restoration is expected to take more time.

In a statement, Aqualectra described the recovery process as complex and warned that the system could fail again during the stabilization phase. “We are fully aware of the impact this has on daily life. Our teams are working diligently and with great caution to restore electricity to all residents,” the company said.

Traffic Lights and Public Safety

The blackout has left several traffic lights out of service, prompting authorities to urge motorists to drive carefully, especially at intersections.

The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) continues to operate under emergency power, ensuring medical services are not interrupted. Meanwhile, schools remain closed for the entire day as a precaution.

The large-scale power outage began early Wednesday morning, disrupting businesses, government services, and households across the island. While gradual restoration efforts are underway, authorities stress that Curaçao is not yet fully back to normal.
