Curaçao Airport Struggles with Overcrowding Amid Tourist Boom

WILLEMSTAD – Hato International Airport is facing daily overcrowding issues due to the rapidly growing influx of tourists visiting Curaçao. According to Muryad de Bruin, Director of the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB), intense discussions are currently underway between the CTB, immigration authorities, and airport stakeholders to find urgent solutions.

The main problem arises when several wide-body aircraft arrive simultaneously. “Just from the Netherlands alone, four large planes land on Curaçao every day,” De Bruin explained to the media. The airport's current infrastructure is struggling to cope with the volume of arriving passengers.

Complaints from South American Tourists

There have been repeated complaints, particularly from South American visitors, regarding their treatment during immigration checks. De Bruin acknowledged that past issues, such as the illegal overstays of travelers from the region, may still influence how immigration authorities interact with them. However, he emphasized a shift in reality: “Today’s Colombia is not the Colombia of twenty years ago. These tourists have spending power and are simply here to enjoy their vacation.”

While the CTB understands the need for strong border control, De Bruin stressed that the quality of service also matters. “It’s that personal touch that tourists appreciate most about Curaçao,” he said.

Expansion Needed

A long-term solution, according to the CTB, lies in the expansion of the airport terminal. During the busy season, Curaçao Airport Partners (CAP) has been erecting temporary tent structures to handle overflow crowds, but these measures are seen as inadequate. De Bruin suggested that the old terminal building, which remains in good condition, could be reactivated to ease the pressure.

The CTB continues to push for improvements, warning that without action, the island risks undermining its growing reputation as a top tourist destination.
