WILLEMSTAD - The governments of Curaçao and Aruba will receive €63 million and €54 million respectively from the Netherlands to upgrade and expand their electricity grids. The announcement was made by Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof during meetings with the leaders of both islands.
The investment aims to support the islands’ transition to wind and solar energy, ensuring that their power networks can handle the growing share of renewable energy sources. According to Schoof, the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly visible in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, underscoring the urgency of these investments.
In total, €150 million will be distributed among the three Caribbean countries within the Kingdom, based on population size, economic factors, and energy consumption.
For Sint Maarten, up to €33 million has been reserved, with the specifics of how the funds will be allocated still under review.
The initiative reflects a broader Kingdom-wide effort to promote sustainable energy generation and improve climate resilience across the Dutch Caribbean.
