Curaçao Entrepreneur Sentenced to Prison for Years of Unpaid Taxes

WILLEMSTAD – A local businesswoman has been sentenced to two months in prison after failing to pay taxes since 2018. The judge rejected her request for postponement during a court session on Wednesday.

The woman had previously received a suspended prison sentence of two months but continued to ignore her outstanding tax debt. This prompted the public prosecutor to demand the enforcement of the sentence. In court, the entrepreneur pleaded for another chance, but the judge remained firm: “You have been given every opportunity and did not make use of them.”

Warning to Other Entrepreneurs

The judge emphasized that granting her another delay would be unfair: “The community and entrepreneurs who do pay their taxes would not understand this.”

The prosecutor underlined the broader message: “A clear signal must be sent to all business owners that taxes must be paid as required.”

Tax revenues are essential for Curaçao, the prosecutor stressed, as they fund hospitals, schools, and infrastructure. Business owners in financial difficulty always have the option of requesting an extension or a payment arrangement from the tax authorities.

Years of Warnings Ignored

The tax office had sent the woman repeated reminders over the years, but she consistently failed to respond. She has now received an official notice at her home, ordering her to report to prison to serve her sentence.

The case serves as a strong reminder of the consequences of long-term tax evasion and highlights the government’s determination to uphold financial discipline.
