Election Rules Clarified: Invalid Votes and Alcohol Sales on Election Day

WILLEMSTAD Voters heading to the polls this Friday should be mindful of how they mark their ballots. Writing anything on the ballot will invalidate the vote, but enjoying a post-election beer will be permitted, as there will be no alcohol ban in place.

The Electoral Council, responsible for organizing the elections, has issued reminders on social media about the correct way to cast a valid vote. Any additional markings—such as writing “thief” in the voting box, signing the ballot, or indicating that someone else voted on their behalf—will render the ballot invalid. The only correct way to vote is by filling in the designated circle with the provided red pencil, without making any other marks on the form.

Additionally, taking photos inside the polling station is strictly prohibited. Authorities have imposed this rule to prevent voters from photographing their ballots to show candidates in exchange for favors.

No Alcohol Ban on Election Day

The government has also confirmed that there will be no temporary ban on alcohol sales—known as lei seku—on election day. Such bans are typically reserved for exceptional circumstances, and officials have found no reason to implement one for this election.

Polling stations will be open from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and voting must be done in person, as proxy voting is not allowed.
