THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - If Curaçao is to serve as a hub for emergency aid in Venezuela, then that emergency aid must be neutral. This is according to the Member of the Dutch Parliament for the GroenLinks party Bram van Ojik.
Van Ojik calls the US "not the ideal partner" when talking to incumbent President Maduro. Minister Blok promised that Curaçao could be used as a transit port for humanitarian aid. The Second Chamber in the Dutch Parliament is discussing this today.
Van Ojik calls the use of Curaçao as an emergency aid hub a 'complicated issue'. "If Maduro, who has the support of the army, does not agree with that help, then nothing will come of it." Van Ojik believes it is important that this help remains neutral. The Netherlands is working closely with the US with that hub, but Van Ojik may call the US 'not the ideal partner to work with Maduro. The US has a political agenda. ' According to Van Ojik, it is better to work with more neutral organizations such as the Red Cross and the UN.
Finally, he says that it is very important for the Netherlands and Curaçao that there is a solution. 'There are now more than 15,000 refugees, the island cannot handle that.'
