Growing concern on Bonaire over increased U.S. military presence in the region

KRALENDIJK - The Government of Bonaire has acknowledged rising public concern about the visible increase in U.S. military activity in the Caribbean. In an official press release, the local government confirmed that residents have expressed unease over the recent expansion of U.S. naval operations near the island.

According to the statement, the U.S. Navy recently intercepted several suspected drug-trafficking vessels in Caribbean waters and has deployed additional military equipment to the region. “The ongoing tensions between the United States and Venezuela are an added source of concern,” the government noted.

Governor John Soliano addressed the situation, confirming that there is regular coordination with the Dutch Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense to closely monitor developments that could impact Bonaire.

“All developments that might affect our island are being carefully followed,” Soliano said, adding that the safety and protection of Bonaire’s population remain the highest priority.

The Dutch central government is reportedly conducting a risk analysis and developing preparedness measures in case regional tensions escalate.

The statement comes amid a period of heightened military activity in the southern Caribbean, following renewed U.S. surveillance and anti-drug operations near Venezuelan waters.
