Healthcare Union CBV Advises Members Not to Join Pro-Silvania Rally

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Healthcare Workers Union (CBV) has advised its members not to participate in the public rally planned for Friday at Wilhelminaplein, organized in support of Minister of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN) Javier Silvania.

CBV president Annaliza Suares-Mathilda stated that support for the minister is a personal matter, not a union issue. “This is a political situation within the MFK party, unrelated to the employment conditions or professional interests of healthcare workers,” she said.

The rally is being organized by supporters of Silvania, who have called on his more than 18,000 voters to show up dressed in white as a symbol of peace.

The event coincides with a public parliamentary meeting scheduled for Friday at 1:00 p.m., during which lawmakers will discuss the leaked audio recording of a heated argument between Silvania and Landsontvanger (Tax Receiver) Alfonso Trona. In the recording, both men accuse each other of corruption and abuse of power, sparking political controversy and widespread criticism.

The incident has caused significant tension within Silvania’s MFK party and drawn sharp condemnation from the opposition, which is demanding a full explanation of the events. Several government labor unions have also filed complaints against Silvania over his treatment of civil servants.

Observers see the controversy as a symptom of deeper structural issues in the relationship between political leadership and the independence of the civil service.

Silvania, however, has denied any wrongdoing and insists that he remains fully committed to carrying out his duties as minister.

The parliamentary debate on the leaked recording is expected to draw significant public attention when it begins on Friday afternoon.
