PATH Curaçao Celebrates First Anniversary: A Year of Fighting Human Trafficking

WILLEMSTAD – Today, March 14, 2025, PATH Curaçao celebrates its first anniversary. Since its establishment, the platform has been dedicated to combating human trafficking and abuse in Curaçao. Over the past year, PATH has taken significant steps to raise awareness, strengthen collaboration, and implement effective measures.

A Year of Impact

Over the past year, PATH Curaçao has achieved several milestones. The platform was officially launched by the Ministry of Justice, establishing a central coordination hub in the fight against human trafficking. Additionally, a twinning project was initiated with Suriname, aimed at joint efforts against human trafficking and closer collaboration with Surinamese authorities. International and local partnerships were also reinforced, particularly in connection with the European Day Against Human Trafficking. Furthermore, in response to international reports, PATH has developed new measures and protocols to better protect victims and more effectively track down perpetrators.

New Developments and Future Plans

Recently, Priyancka Rohera was appointed as the National Rapporteur on Human Trafficking. With her expertise in human rights and migration policy, she will play a crucial role in strengthening cooperation between relevant institutions and conducting in-depth research on human trafficking on the island.

In the coming year, PATH Curaçao remains fully committed to prevention, victim protection, and the prosecution of offenders. Alongside public awareness campaigns and intensified cooperation with border control and law enforcement agencies, PATH is focusing on two key objectives. The first is improving Curaçao’s ranking in the annual TIP report by moving beyond the current Tier 2 Watchlist status. Additionally, PATH is working on establishing a dedicated shelter, ensuring that victims receive better protection and support.
