Plasa Reconstruction Progressing: Completion Now Scheduled for April 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Ministry of Economic Development (MEO) has issued an update on the ongoing reconstruction of the Plasa, clarifying recent public concerns and confirming that the revamped marketplace is now scheduled to be completed by the end of April 2026.

The project, which experienced early delays due to structural issues, is back on track following critical assessments and adjustments. According to MEO, the delays were caused by the discovery of cracks in multiple concrete columns, prompting expert advice to completely replace all 32 structural columns. This required additional time for importing materials, installing temporary support structures, and formwork preparations.

Timeline Adjusted and Communicated

The revised timeline has been shared with all relevant stakeholders to ensure transparency and alignment across the board. “We are fully committed to completing the renovation by the end of April 2026,” MEO stated.

Utilities and Infrastructure Fully Covered

The Ministry also confirmed that coordination with Aqualectra and the construction contractor is proceeding smoothly. Aqualectra will continue to provide technical assistance during the installation and activation of the water and electrical systems, which are being fully replaced along with the sewer infrastructure. Funding for all these works has been secured and budgeted.

No Impact from Board Changes at Stichting Marshe

MEO emphasized that the recent change in the board of Stichting Marshe has no bearing on the progress of the reconstruction, as the Ministry remains solely responsible for the execution and coordination of the project.

Interior Repairs Also Funded

In addition to the structural overhaul, several market units were found to be in poor interior condition. MEO has confirmed that these interior repairs will be carried out in parallel with the main reconstruction works and that funding for this component has also been secured.

Looking Ahead
MEO reiterated its full commitment to completing the reconstruction and reopening of the Marshe within the revised timeframe and called on all stakeholders to continue working collaboratively to bring the renewed market space to life.
