Public Education in Curaçao Set for Major Overhaul with Launch of ‘DOS in Balance’ Program

WILLEMSTADCuraçao’s public education system is preparing for a sweeping series of reforms aimed at enhancing both the well-being of educators and the quality of instruction. The changes are part of a broader effort by the Public Schools Service (Dienst Openbare Scholen – DOS) to modernize and strengthen the island’s public education infrastructure.

According to a press release, the upcoming school year will see the official rollout of “DOS in Balance: the Person and the Content,” a comprehensive program that places equal importance on mental wellness and academic excellence. The initiative will be launched on August 19 during a large-scale conference for 800 educational staff.

As part of the reform package, DOS will introduce bilingual immersion programs at two primary schools: Elis Juliana in Tera Kòrá and Nelly Winkel in Koraalspecht, the latter being a special education institution. At the secondary level, Amador Nita will unveil a bilingual department with a strong emphasis on sports, while Juan Pablo Duarte will offer a new bilingual transition class designed to support language development.

In addition, Scholengemeenschap Otrobanda will reintroduce the Tourism sector at its affiliated schools, Jacques Ferrandi and Goslinga, responding to the island’s growing economic focus on hospitality. Meanwhile, the principle of lifelong learning will make its debut in secondary vocational education, signaling a shift toward continuous professional development.

These initiatives mark a significant shift in educational policy on Curaçao, aimed at preparing students for a dynamic future while providing educators with the tools and support they need to thrive.
