WILLEMSTAD – The activist group Save Zakitó is urging Minister Charles Cooper to intervene immediately in the controversial construction project at the Zakitó lagoon. In a letter dated July 14, the group lists a series of alleged violations and demands government action.
Alleged Violations
According to Save Zakitó, the high-rise towers under construction exceed the allowed building height, and dredging has been carried out in the lagoon and coastal zone without the necessary permits. The group is calling for an independent investigation with public inspections to verify these claims.
The group further asserts that the project is not adhering to permit conditions, highlighting the lack of a nuisance permit. Additionally, residents have not been given full access to the project's documentation, according to Save Zakitó.
Impact on the Surrounding Area
Save Zakitó warns of the negative consequences for the surrounding area. Fishermen no longer have access to the Zakitó lagoons, and there is a loss of free coastal access, disruption to recreational activities, and traffic congestion. The livability in neighborhoods such as Piscaderaweg, Charo, and Royal Palm is also being negatively affected.
The group also criticizes the 100-meter distance criterion for objection procedures, which they claim excludes many residents from having a say and from legal protection.
Environmental Damage
The letter also highlights potential environmental harm, including odor disturbances, an increase in mosquitoes, damage to mangroves, and harm to the coral reef. Furthermore, the natural flow of water has been blocked, the group argues.
"This attacks fundamental values such as transparency, legal certainty, and equal treatment," says Save Zakitó. The group is calling for a prompt response within the legal timeframe to address these concerns.
As the controversy grows, Save Zakitó is calling on both the government and the public to ensure that the project's impact on the environment and the local community is thoroughly investigated and addressed.
