Editorial: Curaçao’s New Government—Are You Listening?

This week marked a new chapter for Curaçao, as a newly sworn-in government takes the reins of leadership. With that comes hope—but also a heavy responsibility.

In the spirit of democracy, we reached out to our readers on Facebook and asked one simple question: What message would you like to share with our new leaders?

Your responses were heartfelt, sharp, passionate, and honest. They form a chorus of voices that reflect the real concerns, dreams, and frustrations of the people of Curaçao.

And if there’s one message that stood out above all else, it’s this:

Listen. Not just with your ears, but with your actions.

A Desire for Transparency and Accountability

Many of you want more than social media updates and staged photo ops. You want real, detailed communication—about policies, decisions, and long-term vision. Citizens are tired of vague promises and backroom deals. They want accountability, not arrogance.

"We need more information about what you're doing—not just through social media."

Sustainable Growth Without Losing Ourselves

Readers made it clear: Curaçao must not be for sale. Development is welcome—but only when it's thoughtful and respectful of our environment and culture. The risk of overdevelopment looms large.

"Protect the authenticity of the island. Don’t turn it into a concrete jungle."

"Why is protected land being handed over for construction?"

Fix What’s Been Neglected

Others urged the government to finally address long-standing local issues that have been swept under the rug for too long: stray animals, litter, traffic safety, and public transportation.

"We need proper bus stop signage, route information—nothing fancy, just functional."

"Please take care of neglected and abused animals."

"What are we doing with the old refinery? That waterfront could be redeveloped into something beautiful."

A Call for Leadership Rooted in Love

And yet, amid the criticism, there was a deeply hopeful message: govern with love and respect for the land and the people.

"Try to do your work with Love and Respect for your country."

We hear this as a plea—not just for better governance, but for leadership with heart.

To the New Government:

The people have spoken. They do not expect miracles, but they do expect sincerity, transparency, and a real plan. They ask that you stop seeing their voices as noise—and start recognizing them as the very reason you hold office.

These voices will not be silenced. And neither will we.

We will continue to collect your messages, publish your stories, and hold power to account.

This is your island. Your future. Your voice.

Let it be heard.

If you haven’t shared your message yet, there’s still time. Comment on our Facebook page or send us a message directly. This conversation isn’t ending—it’s just beginning.
