Secretary of State Zsolt Szabó Highlights Good Governance and Financial Reforms for Curaçao's Future Development

During his visit to Curaçao, Secretary of State Zsolt Szabó emphasized that good governance and solid financial policies are essential for the island's continued development. He stated that the reforms within the Landspakketten (country packages) should lead to greater self-sufficiency and sustainable growth.

Szabó acknowledged that progress has been made, with economic growth and support from the Netherlands advancing structural reforms in financial management, healthcare, education, the labor market, and spatial planning under the Rhuggenaath government. However, he pointed out that the work is far from complete.

Recent studies from the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten and Aruba reveal that spending on pension provisions and healthcare in Curaçao is unsustainable. Moreover, Curaçao already has the highest expenditure levels and the lowest benefits. This highlights the necessity of an economic agenda focused on strengthening economic growth and sustainable income generation. Investing in education is a crucial starting point for these efforts.

Szabó emphasized that discussions must begin now on how to ensure the sustainability of these reforms after 2027, ensuring that the progress made does not falter due to a lack of capacity. The PAR party intends to engage in dialogue with the Netherlands on this matter. The aim is to work within the Kingdom to create a stronger, more sustainable Curaçao, as well as benefit Aruba, Sint Maarten, and the broader Caribbean part of the Kingdom, all while supporting Dutch businesses. The core principle is that all efforts should benefit the community and citizens.

Furthermore, the Secretary of State reiterated that tackling corruption and fraud in governance remains a high priority. He rightly emphasized that good governance and transparency are essential for building trust and for the continued economic development of Curaçao.

The PAR political party has always advocated for good and ethical governance, as well as a worthy education system and healthcare. It is vital to actively combat corruption and fraud, while continually investing in administrative integrity, education quality, and healthcare to ensure a secure future for Curaçao and its people.

The PAR views the reforms not as an end goal, but as a tool to make Curaçao more resilient and economically stronger. It is up to everyone to ensure that this opportunity is maximized, allowing Curaçao to continue its development within the Kingdom, based on good governance, transparency, and sustainable growth.
