People are saying that there is a government crisis now and that Curaçao is currently without a government that has the majority in parliament. But this is not true.
A minister functions based on the support of a majority of the Members of Parliament. To know if a minister or all ministers have support (confidence) of a majority in Parliament, this must take place in a public meeting where each member officially indicates if they still support a minister or the entire government. The MP can only do this in the public meeting. The people, those who voted for the MPs must hear this.
What the MPs say on the radio or in the newspaper, now even on social media does not count.
During this public meeting, each MP can indicate whether they support a minister or not. This happens through a motion of no confidence which has to be presented to the President of Parliament. If a majority has confidence in the minister or the government then no one has to go home. If a majority vote in favor of the motion of no confidence then yes, the minister or the entire government goes home. Then we can talk about a government crisis. You can stand in Fort Amsterdam and watch the minister, or the entire government resign at the governor’s mansion.
But the MPs have not been able to voice themselves in a public meeting, so there is no government crisis (yet). Both the coalition and the opposition currently have 10 seats. It is possible that before the public meeting, coalition partner PAR swears in a new MP to take the vacated seat and the government can count again on a small majority of 11-10.
I keep on laughing on this small rock.
