WILLEMSTAD – Fewer households in Curaçao own landline phones, laptops, and personal computers, while internet access and mobile device usage have significantly increased over the past decade, according to an analysis by Curaçao’s Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
The CBS report, which compares data from the 2023 census to that of 2011, highlights a clear shift in household technology trends over a 12-year period.
Decline of Landlines and Traditional Mobile Phones
In 2011, around 71.2% of households (39,179 homes) had a landline phone. By 2023, this figure had dropped to 44.5% (26,738 homes), reflecting a declining preference for fixed telephone services.
Similarly, while 93.8% of households (51,629 homes) reported owning a mobile phone in 2011, most were older models, not smartphones. By 2023, this number had fallen to 31.2% (18,720 homes), indicating a shift away from traditional mobile phones. Instead, 67.7% of households now own smartphones, emphasizing a growing reliance on modern mobile technology.
Declining PC and Laptop Ownership
Another notable trend is the decrease in computer and laptop ownership. In 2011, 62.6% of households (34,456 homes) had a PC or laptop. By 2023, this number had declined to 45.2% (27,134 homes). CBS attributes this change to the increasing use of smartphones and tablets, which often replace the need for traditional computers.
Internet Access Continues to Grow
Despite the decline in landlines and personal computers, internet access in Curaçao has surged. In 2011, only 53% of households (29,145 homes) had an internet connection. By 2023, this had risen to 71.7% (43,093 homes), reflecting a growing need for digital connectivity across the island.
Essential Household Appliances Remain Stable
While technology usage has evolved, essential home appliances remain widely used.
Refrigerators: In 2011, 97.4% of households (53,566 homes) owned a refrigerator. By 2023, this figure slightly declined to 94.9%, though the total number of households with a fridge increased to 57,011.
Washing Machines: Ownership of washing machines also saw a minor decrease. In 2011, 91.1% of households (50,118 homes) had one. By 2023, the percentage dipped slightly to 89.8%, but the total number of households with a washing machine rose to 53,962.
The CBS report highlights a shift towards mobile technology and internet dependency, marking a significant transformation in household digital trends in Curaçao over the past decade.
