WILLEMSTAD – LengaGPT is a Large Language Model (LLM) similar to ChatGPT but entirely dedicated to Papiamentu. Designed to understand and process the language with unprecedented accuracy and cultural sensitivity, this innovation marks a significant step in strengthening the digital presence of Papiamentu. The milestone comes after four years of research and development, according to Wintertuin Curaçao, the initiative’s driving force. 

Limited Online Resources 

Wintertuin Curaçao launched the ambitious project in 2021 after encountering limitations with mainstream LLMs, which struggle to process languages with limited online resources effectively. 

LLMs are trained on vast amounts of text data—such as books, articles, and websites—allowing them to recognize patterns and generate human-like text. While widely used platforms like ChatGPT excel in dominant languages, they often fail to capture the nuances of Papiamentu, including its unique grammar, syntax, and idiomatic expressions, says Wintertuin Curaçao. 

Cultural Relevance 

Joeri Oltheten, one of the project leads, explains: 
"LengaGPT is not just about linguistic recognition; it’s about providing a platform that ensures accuracy, cultural relevance, and a deep understanding of the local context." 

LengaGPT addresses a critical need for culturally relevant AI tools. It will facilitate the development of educational resources, digital content, and public services tailored to the Papiamentu-speaking community. Additionally, the initiative aims to promote social inclusion and economic growth by making advanced AI technology more accessible. 

Community Workshop 

The public will have an opportunity to help refine LengaGPT on Thursday, February 27, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, during a workshop at The Triangle in Otrobanda. Participants will be able to interact with the prototype and provide valuable feedback.
