WILLEMSTAD – Satellite internet provider Starlink has not yet submitted an application for a telecommunications concession in Curaçao, according to Curt Belfor, director of the Regulatory Authority of Curaçao (RAC). Belfor made the statement this morning during a radio interview with Joris Reer.
Curaçao recently updated its concession regulations, making it possible for companies like Starlink to apply for a local operating license. However, Belfor emphasized that the regulatory body cannot assess or process anything until a formal request is submitted.
Starlink, a company linked to Elon Musk’s space venture SpaceX, offers global high-speed, low-cost internet via satellite, particularly in areas with limited traditional connectivity. The company previously indicated on its website that it intends to launch services in Curaçao.
At present, Starlink is only permitted for limited maritime use in Curaçao. Meanwhile, the company has already become eligible to apply for licenses in the Caribbean Netherlands, where regulatory structures are aligned with European Dutch standards.
Should Starlink file an application, the RAC confirmed it would review the request based on the newly established criteria. For now, any broader rollout of Starlink’s services in Curaçao remains pending.
