Concerns Raised in Parliament Over Halted Tourism Training Program Amid Curaçao’s Rising Global Popularity

WILLEMSTAD – Former Minister of Economy and new MP Ruisandro Cijntje has expressed serious concern over the temporary suspension of the “On-the-Job and Refresher Training” project aimed at preparing more locals to work in the tourism sector. His remarks come at a time when Curaçao is gaining international recognition as a top travel destination.

In a statement referencing the positive international coverage published in April 2025, Cijntje acknowledged the growing global interest in the island. However, he emphasized that this spotlight makes it even more urgent to strengthen the tourism workforce.

“It is with great satisfaction that I noted the report showing that Curaçao is among the top international destinations. Yet I must also express my growing concern about the current status of our training program to prepare more people to work in this vital sector, which is now on hold,” he stated.

Cijntje has directed several formal questions to the Minister of Economic Development:

Will the necessary funds be allocated to continue and complete the training project?

Will there be continued investment in human capital to encourage employment in the tourism sector?

Is there a concrete plan to address the chronic labor shortage in this key sector of the economy, especially given the fading hope that the refinery will reopen and the recent announcement that Global Oil will no longer resume asphalt production?

The tourism sector currently serves as the strongest pillar of Curaçao’s economy, and Cijntje’s inquiry aims to ensure that the government remains committed to developing local talent to sustain its growth.
