WILLEMSTAD – The introduction of the National Institute of Culture of Curaçao took place at Gomezplein 7. This special moment marks a significant step toward the realization of our National Institute of Culture of Curaçao, which will focus on preserving, promoting, and strengthening Curaçao’s culture. On this occasion, the Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports inaugurated an exhibition on the first of the three floors that will make up the Institute.
The evening was hosted by Mr. Glenn Thomas, the master of ceremonies, and began with a rendition of the Curaçao National Anthem, performed by the Bold Star Foundation. Attendees watched a video by visual artist Giovanni Abath, who explained in detail the added value of a National Institute of Culture for Curaçao’s artists. Mrs. Lizette Sambo-Velder outlined the extensive efforts made by the Culture and Sports Sector to initiate the process of establishing the Institute, while Mrs. Aisha Gijsbertha-Leer explained the Institute’s objectives and its dedication to developing a dynamic and resilient cultural structure. Through innovation, education, and collaboration, the Institute will contribute to uniting the population, fostering economic growth, and raising cultural awareness both locally and internationally. In short, the Institute will serve as a vital pillar in nation-building. The first step will be the launch of workshops and courses aimed at increasing the operational capacity of cultural organizations. The Institute will coordinate efforts and empower the cultural sector to keep our culture alive! What is a Kargadó di Kultura?
A Kargadó di Kultura is someone who has exceptionally dedicated themselves to the preservation, practice, and promotion of Curaçao’s cultural identity. Their work forms the foundation upon which the nation’s cultural heritage stands and serves as an inspiration for future generations. The exhibition reminds us that culture is a collective construction, a dynamic process that requires continuous community participation. From fishermen to teachers, from youth to the elderly—everyone contributes to the preservation and evolution of our culture.
